….August is a magical time to be looking up at the night sky. We have the best meteor shower of the year in full swing, peaking on the night/early morning of the 12/13th of August. The Perseids Meteor Shower runs annually from July 17th to August 24th and is the result of the Earth crossing the orbit of Comet Swift-Tuttle. The tail of the comet, leaving dust particles that burn up on entering our atmosphere, producing shooting stars! We start the month with no Moon in the night sky as she is rising in the morning and setting in the evening, up until the New Moon on the 8th, meaning her glare will not interfere with our view of this spectacular show of nature! If you have never seen a shooting star before, now is your time! Venture away from the bright lights of the villages and look up. The best night will be the night of the 12th, after midnight, but any night from the beginning of the month through to the middle sees a good chance, as the Moon is in a favorable phase!

The Summer sky brings many other delights. Without the Moon in the sky the brightest part of our Milky Way, the Sagittarius and Persus arm are visible, forming a bright river of stars leading to the heart of our galaxy! We also have the almighty Jupiter, Zeus the King of the Gods and the true Lord of the Rings Saturn rising in the east, with the increasing darkness of the night sky! It is a wonderful time to explore our universe, with many treasures to be appreciated! And we can not forget the intricate relationship that our Mother Earth shares with our only Satellite, the Moon! Her continuous dance with Earth has a profound affect on all life on our planet, from controlling the tides of our Oceans & Seas, the navigation of animals, and there seems to be a connection with reproduction and growth in the animal and plant kingdoms, to moderating the rotation of our axis! Being the closest celestial object in the sky and having no atmosphere make her a joy to observe with the telescope, or even a good pair of binoculars!

From the 9th onward you will see the Moon as a slither of light in the night sky, slowly becoming more illuminated as each night passes, up until the Full Moon on the 22nd. We have starry skies in our observations from the beginning of the month till the 12th, after the Moon and the Planets become the highlights. We finish the month with dark starry skies, with the bright Moon rising after midnight from the 28th! Clear skies to everyone!

Agosto es una época mágica para mirar al cielo nocturno. Tenemos la mejor lluvia de meteoros del año en pleno apogeo, con un pico en la noche y madrugada del 12 al 13 de agosto. La lluvia de meteoros de las Perseidas se produce anualmente del 17 de julio al 24 de agosto y es el resultado del cruce de la Tierra con la órbita del cometa Swift-Tuttle. La cola del cometa, deja partículas de polvo que se queman al entrar en nuestra atmósfera, ¡produciendo estrellas fugaces! Comenzamos el mes sin Luna en el cielo nocturno, ya que sale por la mañana y se pone por la tarde, hasta la Luna Nueva del día 8, lo que significa que su resplandor no interferirá en nuestra visión de este espectacular espectáculo de la naturaleza. Si nunca has visto una estrella fugaz, ¡ahora es tu momento! Aléjate de las luces brillantes de los pueblos y mira hacia arriba. La mejor noche será la del día 12, después de la medianoche, pero cualquier noche desde principios de mes hasta mediados tiene una buena oportunidad, ya que la Luna está en una fase favorable.

El cielo de verano ofrece muchos otros placeres. Es un momento maravilloso para explorar nuestro universo, ¡con muchos tesoros que apreciar! ¡Y no podemos olvidar la intrincada relación que nuestra Madre Tierra comparte con nuestro único Satélite, la Luna! Su continua danza con la Tierra tiene un profundo efecto sobre toda la vida en nuestro planeta, desde el control de las mareas de nuestros océanos y mares, la navegación de los animales, y parece haber una conexión con la reproducción y el crecimiento en los reinos animal y vegetal, hasta la moderación de la rotación de nuestro eje. Al ser el objeto celeste más cercano en el cielo y no tener atmósfera, es un placer observarlo con el telescopio, o incluso con un buen par de prismáticos.

A partir del día 9 verás la Luna como un resbalón de luz en el cielo nocturno, que poco a poco se va iluminando más a medida que pasa la noche, hasta la Luna Llena del día 22. Tendremos cielos estrellados en nuestras observaciones desde el principio del mes hasta el día 11, después de que la Luna y los Planetas se conviertan en lo más destacado. Terminamos el mes con cielos oscuros y estrellados, con la Luna brillante que sale después de la medianoche del día 28. ¡Cielos despejados para todos!
