….The night sky of June begins with the awesome darkness, giving us the best possibility of the month to observe and explore our universe. With no Moon present in our observations until the 11th, we can truly discover the beauty of the darkness. The New Moon on the 10th does see an annular solar eclipse, but we will not be able to appreciate it as we are not in the main shadow path. These weeks of darkness are a good time to catch shooting stars and observe distant galaxies, star clusters and double stars with the the telescope.
From the 15th onward the Moon becomes very bright in the night sky and is the protagonist of our observations, up until the Full Moon on the 24th! Another Super Moon, known as the Strawberry Moon, as it is the time that strawberries ripen. All moon rises ares spectacular but the Super Moon, being closer to Earth is really an awe-inspiring natural event! We will be at the top of the Calderon Hondo Volcano to enjoy the sunset on the west coast and the moon rise on the east.
A celestial event not to be missed is the Summer Solstice on June 21st! It is easy to take our Sun for granted as he is always present. The Sun is our Main Star and gives life to Earth by day and night.The solstice is an important cultural event, celebrated since prehistoric times. It marked the symbolic death and rebirth of the Sun. Here, on this ancient island we have two known astroarchaeology sites that are thought to be thousands of years old, Los Soles de Tejate and El Coral de Asemblea. We know nothing of these people responsible for creating these archeological wonders, but what we do know is that they showed an incredibly intricate understanding of the sky and the movement of the celestial objects throughout the year!

El cielo nocturno de junio comienza con una impresionante oscuridad, dándonos la mejor posibilidad del mes para observar y explorar nuestro universo. Sin la presencia de la Luna en nuestras observaciones hasta el día 11, podremos descubrir realmente la belleza de la oscuridad. La Luna Nueva del día 10 sí verá un eclipse solar anular, pero no podremos apreciarlo al no estar en la trayectoria de la sombra principal. Estas semanas de oscuridad son un buen momento para captar estrellas fugaces y observar galaxias lejanas, cúmulos estelares y estrellas dobles con el telescopio.
A partir del día 15 la Luna se vuelve muy brillante en el cielo nocturno y es la protagonista de nuestras observaciones, ¡hasta la Luna Llena del día 24! Otra Superluna, conocida como la Luna de Fresa, ya que es el momento en que maduran las fresas. Todas las salidas de la Luna son espectaculares, pero la Súper Luna, al estar más cerca de la Tierra, es un acontecimiento natural realmente impresionante. Estaremos en la cima del Volcán Calderón Hondo para disfrutar de la puesta de sol en la costa oeste y de la salida de la luna en el este.
Un acontecimiento celestial que no debe perderse es el Solsticio de Verano, el 21 de junio. Es fácil dar por sentado que nuestro Sol está siempre presente. El Sol es nuestra estrella principal y da vida a la Tierra de día y de noche.El solsticio es un importante acontecimiento cultural, celebrado desde la prehistoria. Marca la muerte y el renacimiento simbólicos del Sol. Aquí, en esta antigua isla, tenemos dos yacimientos astroarqueológicos conocidos que se cree que tienen miles de años, Los Soles de Tejate y El Coral de Asemblea. No sabemos nada de los responsables de la creación de estas maravillas arqueológicas, pero lo que sí sabemos es que mostraban un conocimiento increíblemente intrincado del cielo y del movimiento de los objetos celestes a lo largo del año.
